Morgarten findet statt
Erich Langjahr, Beni Müller, Switzerland, 1978o
In 1977, the 662nd anniversary of the Battle of Morgarten is being celebrated in the border region Zug-Schwyz on lake Aegeri, where the young primal Swiss cantons are said to have victoriously confronted the Habsburg dukes for the first time. Zug documentary filmmaker Erich Langjahr and his co-director at the time, Beni Müller, observe the preparations for and the celebrations of the memorial day from many angles. Without any commentary but with a good sense of humour the show how the rural population central Switzerland ticks, how people identify with the historically thinly documented battle and how the myth of Morgarten is instrumentalised by politicians and church representatives.
